The 'Astronomology' of the

'Sobenox Cardinal Festival of Libra♎'

[ ☉ ⊕ ♎ ]

Northern 'Autumnfest' / Southern 'Springfest'

A 4 Day, New Season Festival to celebrate the Libra♎ Equinox aka 'Sobenox' (the SO-uth B-ound E-qui-NOX) and the passage from the 2nd to the 3rd Quarter Season

This period covers one of the 4 major Sun/Earth events, the 2 Equinoxes & the 2 Solstices, which divide our Year into its 4 Quarter Seasons

It is called a 'Cardinal' Festival because Libra♎ is one of the 4 Cardinal Zodiac Signs;

Aries♈, Cancer♋, Libra♎ & Capricorn♑

They are called 'Cardinal' signs because cardinal comes from the latin cardo which means 'hinge/pole/axis', signifying the poles/axis of the equinoxes & solstices

So, we can symbolise these events using the Sun symbol '☉' & the Earth symbol '⊕' together with the symbol for the particular equinox or solstice

At this time the Sun is reaching the '1st Point of Libra' which is symbolised with '♎' so we can add this to the Sun & Earth symbols to give a combined symbol for the Festival:

☉ ⊕ ♎

The 4 Days of this festival each year are:

Day 1 [☉⊕♎1]

'3rd Season's Day'

Numerical Date [YYYYY.07.00]

Day #184 of the Year

This day is the 4th of our 5 special Intercalary Days which celebrate the New Year, the Equinoxes and the Solstices, and balance the year into 4 equal Quarter Seasons

It occurs between the last day of Quarter Season 2 (Northern Summer/Southern Winter) and the first day of Quarter Season 3 (Northern Autumn/Southern Spring)

It occurs the day after the 30th & last day of the Triad Month of 'SIX-Virgo♍' [06.30] and the day before the 1st day of the Triad Month of 'SEVEN-Libra♎' [07.01] and so has the numerical date 07.00, Triad Month 7 Day 0

It is the day marked as 184 in the blue circle on the UCC Year graphic at the top of this page

It has the symbol '' as it introduces the Quarter Season which forms this 'bottom left' part of the Zodiac circle

It celebrates the Sobenox, which normally occurs 3 days later on Day #187 of the Year. (See 'Balancing The Year' below for more on this)

Day 2 [☉⊕♎2]

1st Libra♎

Numerical Date [YYYYY.07.01]

Day #185 of the Year

Day 3 [☉⊕♎3]

2nd Libra♎

Numerical Date [YYYYY.07.02]

Day #186 of the Year

Day 4 [☉⊕♎4]

3rd Libra♎

Numerical Date [YYYYY.07.03]

Day #187

This will usually also be the day of the actual 'Sobenox' when the Sun crosses the equator falling south and the poles of the earth are at 90° to the rays of the Sun

In any case the Sobenox will ALWAYS occur on one of the days of this festival

So... On To The 'Astronomology' of the Sobenox

The following 4 shots from the package Stellarium show the position of the Sun on each of the 4 days of the festival

[☉⊕♎4] Sobenox Day

The Astronomy

The last of the 4 shots above shows the Sun on its Ecliptic path crossing the Celestial Equator falling south, arriving at its 'Descending Node' and the 'First Point of Libra' (♎)

This is the intersection of the Ecliptic (the curved red line) with the 12 Hrs Right Ascension (RA) line and the 0° Declination (DE) line in the equatorial grid

This is shown as -  RA/DE (of date) : 12h 00m / 0°00'  - in the top left of the picture

At this point The Sun leaves the Star Sign Virgo ♍, which correlates to the 2 hours of Right Ascension from 10 hours to 12 hours

We can see that the Star Sign Virgo is currently occupied by the Constellation Leo due to the Precession of the Equinoxes, the Great Year

The Sun is then entering the Star Sign Libra ♎, which correlates to the 2 hours of Right Ascension from 12 hours to 14 hours

We can see that the Star Sign Libra is currently occupied by the Constellation Virgo, again due to Precession

We can confirm this 'astronomological' link between the astronomy & the astrology with a shot from the website 'Planet Watcher'

The 1st Point of Libra

The Astrology

This shot taken at the time of the 'Sobenox' shows the Sun at 0°Libra♎

This confirms the Astrological alignment with the 12 hours Right Ascension line of the Stellarium Astronomy shot

You will notice that the Planet Watcher shot shows the same anti-clockwise cycle of the Zodiac as I have used for the Calendar, but rotated 180° starting with Aries on the left at '9 o'clock'

This is because the astrological Zodiac shows the Eastern Horizon on the left and the North at the bottom, whereas I've followed the Ecliptic path of the Sun, showing the North at the top and the South at the bottom!

Balancing The Year

You may have noticed from the above that we mark the Sobenox and the move into the New Quarter Season with the 4th of our 5 special Intercalary Days, which is the 1st day of this festival and Day #184 of the Year.

But the actual equinoctial event usually takes place 3 days later on the 4th day of the festival, Day #187 of the UCC Year, and this is the actual start of Autumn in the northern hemisphere and Spring in the southern hemisphere

The 3 day discrepancy is because the earth's orbit is elliptical rather than round, and its axis is tilted, which means that the orbit doesn't fit exactly within a circle

The Sun therefore actually spends more time - 187 days - above the equator than it does below - 178 days - making the actual seasons slightly different in length

The UCC balances the Seasons via its 5 special Intercalary days making 4 Quarter Seasons of exactly 90 days each.

But the Sun actually spends a bit more time in Northern Summer/Southern Winter (Cancer, Leo & Virgo) than it does in Northern Winter/Southern Summer (Capricorn, Aquarius & Pisces) as it is further away from the earth during Northern Summer/Southern Winter due to the ellipse, and therefore appears to travel slower in the sky making those months a little longer in reality.

The slide below shows when the nearest and furthest points of the elliptical orbit occur

Eliptical Orbit

And So...

We can see above the historical links between astrology and astronomy reflected in their modern day uses

And in the spirit of left brain/right brain balance and Scientific & Spiritual equilibrium, I think it's time we brought them back together!

After all, achieving BALANCE is what life is ALL about... In this way we become 'whole', a 'Holy Spirit'

Anyway, the main point to remember is that the Sobenox will always occur on one of the 4 days of this Cardinal Festival EVERY year and we can use this special 4 day period to meditate on the transition from the 2nd Season into the 3rd and the change of natural energies that that brings

Happy New Season!
